What is this weird thing I do?
Hi,
I am wondering if anyone could give me a little ideal on what this is. When I fold towels, it has to be a certain way. Three folds. Nothing more, nothing less. And the towels have to be even, as in the edges. No bunched up on the inside. And Gods for bid that the tags are on the outside when I fold them. I freak out. Example…I am sick (physically) and my husband does the laundry. If he fold them "wrong" I trip out and unfold them & refold them, the *right* way.
He just looks at me like B, I just folded them..LOL..but he’s learned to live with my quirks.
Also, things HAVE to have balance, or again I’m like omg that’s not right. Example…on top of my tv stand I have candles, surround speakers, a frog/turtle dish (this one is in the middle) then I have two glass frogs, a router & a Sprint booster. If these items are out of sorts, oh NO way that could happen! Things are totally "even"
One speaker on each side, the router & booster on opposite sides, candles one on each side, the frog dish in the middle & the glass frogs in front of the frog dish. Out of sorts, I do NOT think so.
I used to work in a convenient store, and BIC lighters come in little black holders and the colors are all mixed. I would take ALL the black holders, remove ALL the lighters and organize them by color. I couldn’t take it that they were mixed up.
It all comes down to balance. I am also an organized person when it comes to paperwork, photo albums etc. I am not a clean freak though, again I am sick. But when the kids & hubby trash it…I totally freak out and kinda flip out and it HAS to be cleaned. So I will bust my butt cleaning because I can’t take it. This in turn throws me into a flare up and it kills.
Anyhow, any help would be appreciated.
I also have to add that I am Bi-Polar, Borderline, & Post Traumatic Syndrome.
Add on O.C.D. to the last paragraph. Perfection is what you’re looking for all the time, but rarely get it. All these symptoms are the result of anxiety disorder. See a therapist.

It sounds like obsessive compulsive disorder, since you are fixated in things being organized and in a specific order. But definetly talk to your psychiatrist about this, it is important.

You are probably worried that you’re OCD, right? I don’t think what you do sounds that extreme, though. I believe, from what you’ve described, that you are just sort of quirky when it comes to organizing, kind of like Monica on Friends. I mean, everyone’s got those "things"- like, I have a similar towel thing, where they have to be folded a certain way, but that’s just because it’s the way I like them, not because I’m a psycho or anything. Also, the thing with the lighters- just another fun little quirk. I’ll tell you a couple of my "things" so you can see that an (allegedly) normal person just sort of has these little quirks:
I don’t like to have e-mails in my inbox, and am therefore a chronic deleter. (I have accidentally-on-purpose deleted lots of things in the past that I actually ended up needing later)
On my desk at work, there is a little "NO SOLICITING" sign, and I have to straighten it out the second it gets even a little crooked.
The second a dirty dish goes into the sink, I have to wash it right away, instead of leaving it in there for even an hour or two.
See? These little quirks are just things that make up our personalities. Embrace your little weirdnesses and don’t worry about it.

Don’t freak out. This is O/C and there is help. Just once, leave one item in a different "uneven" spot. It will bother you for sure, but leave it alone. Your mind will adjust to it. I to am bi_polar.
